Solution:

Opera 4 beta 4 and later for Windows have embedded Java support. This means we use the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) directly instead of using the plug-in to run Java applets. It is not possible to use the Java plug-in with Opera 4 beta 4 and later.

Opera for other platforms may support Java through the use of a Java plug-in. Please consult the documentation for each platform for information about Opera's Java capabilities.

The runtime environments supported is the "Java Runtime Environment" from Sun version 1.2 and above. This means that those of you who have been running e.g. the 1.1.3 version of the JRE/plug-in will have to install a new version of JRE to run applets.

Since version 1.2, the Java Runtime Environment and the Java Plug-in is the same download and installation.
